Safeguarding the food chain
Protecting consumers, building knowledge
Global supply chains provide us with the foods we demand 365 days a year. But sourcing foods from around the world brings risks of contaminants which are illegal under tight EU food safety regulations. Keeping unwanted contaminants, such as pesticide residues and dioxins, out of the UK food chain forms a major part of CSL's work.
We contribute to food chain safety in two ways: by analysis of food materials to detect contaminants and residues; and by building knowledge and expertise among food producers and laboratories in developing countries.
Our specialists work with governments and industries around the world to assess risks from contamination, detect unwanted chemicals in food and support the building of local capacity to improve supply chain safety. By working with laboratories to strengthen analytical methods and skills, CSL helps ensure that foodstuffs destined for export to the EU meet the required standards.
Food chain safety is also affected by counterfeit or adulterated foods, and CSL specialises in determining the origin and authenticity of many food types. Using sophisticated analytical techniques and innovative methods, we have established an internationally recognised position as a leader in this field.
