Our purpose
Assess. Protect. Respond.
Society today depends on a constant supply of safe food. And we expect the health and quality of our natural environment to be protected. Many of us simply take these qualities of life for granted. But meeting the challenges of safe food and improving environmental quality requires scientific understanding, innovation and constant vigilance. And this is where we come into our own.
Protecting and safeguarding
Protecting the health and vitality of the natural environment and safeguarding the UK's food supply form the core of CSL's work. Our science has purpose, and because of this we have a direct impact on the well-being of all who live in the UK.
Decision making
Our specialists carry out their work in modern, purpose-built laboratory facilities in North Yorkshire. From analytical chemists to zoologists, the 500 scientific staff focus on delivery of technical information, advice, services and applied research to Government and private sector customers in the UK and overseas. The information and advice we give allows these organisations to make better decisions, decisions which impact on our everyday lives.
Responding to emergencies
There is no doubt that we live in a changing and challenging world. This is why our science is focused firmly on assessing risks, on protecting foodchain safety and environmental health, on encouraging sustainable land use, and on improving techniques for responding rapidly to emergency events.
