Wildlife Ecology and Management Group
The Wildlife Ecology and Management Group delivers high-quality research, consultancy and science services to Defra, other government departments, the EU and the commercial sector in the UK and overseas.
Our specialists excel in the sciences that underpin wildlife ecology and management, working from our world class, state-of-the-art facilities. We contribute to the quality of the UK wildlife ecology and management science base through inter-agency collaborations and partnerships with universities, and we promote public awareness and understanding.
The group comprises the largest concentration of vertebrate ecologists in the UK, and our senior staff undertake science and policy support at a national and international level.
Overview
The group provides key science, support and services to underpin government policy on wildlife disease and wildlife management. Work on wildlife diseases is carried out by our Wildlife Disease Ecology and Veterinary Surveillance teams. Responsibility for wildlife management issues lies with our Wildlife Management and Animal Welfare and Conservation Management and Non-Native Species teams.
Our Bird Management Unit plays a key UK and international role in providing research, support and consultancy services to manage bird risks associated with air safety.
The Statistics and Informatics team provides key expertise, services and support within CSL, and its work is central to many of our customers' strategies.
CSL is one of the main institutions in the UK for regulated wildlife studies. In response to a request by the Home Office, we have initiated the provision of Home Office training modules in wild species in an alliance with the University of York. CSL is the only UK institution to have received Universities Training Group approval to provide these wildlife modules.
