Spatial processes

Utilising data from across CSL's scientific spectrum, map-based information is created to provide scientific evidence to underpin policy, risk analysis and contingency response. The science of spatial processes plays a major role in linking research findings to the wider, economic, environmental and social context and in evaluating the social dimensions of risk.

Most data comprises a spatial element - from address books to geological surveys, from weather forecasts to town plans. A huge quantity of high quality Geographical Information (GI), mostly relating to agriculture and the environment, is generated by the scientific investigations that take place across CSL's remit. In addition, CSL have access to numerous sets of data provided by the government and its agencies, as well as third party information, such as Ordnance Survey.

Combining these different sources of data and presenting them visually in map form, provides not only a holistic view, but a unique insight that would not be available from the individual datasets alone.
