Rick Mumford -
Team leader
Pest and Disease Identification
Rick leads the Pest & Disease Identification team, with overall responsibility for budget and resource management, including over 50 staff. In addition to his management responsibilities, he continues to provide scientific advice and training on the detection, identification and control of plant viruses and virus-like diseases. He also acts as a UK representative at meetings of the EPPO diagnostics panel and ISTA's seed health committee. He is also an editor for the journal New Disease Reports.

John Elphinstone -
Sub Team Leader Bacteriology
John is the Principal Plant Bacteriologist who is responsible for the management, delivery and quality control of plant bacteriology diagnostic services. He is also actively involved in the management and delivery of R&D on bacterial plant pathogens. His role also includes consultancy and risk assessment to UK and international plant health services in support of policy.

Charles Lane -
Sub Team Leader Mycology
Charles is a senior plant pathologist in the plant pest and disease identification team. He manages the mycology sub team that is involved in providing diagnostic services to Defra and commercial customers testing plant samples for the presence of fungal pathogens. His main area of expertise is in the diagnosis of quarantine listed fungi and has worked on pathogens such as Phytophthora ramorum, Monilinia fructicola, and Colletotrichum acutatum. He provides consultancy and training to a wide range of customers in addition to developing and implementing diagnostic protocols, plant healthcare factsheets and formal quality assurance to ISO17025 for key pathogens.

Paul Beales -
Senior Mycologist
Paul is a senior fungal plant disease diagnostician. Working in the mycology sub-team, he manages SOD (Phytophthora ramorum and P.kernoviae) diagnosis and acts as a diagnostic consultant for Defra and commercial customers. He provides advice and training to UK and International customers on fungal plant pathogens and their plant health significance. He also manages the sub-teams mycology research programme.

Kelvin Hughes -
Senior Seed Pathologist
Kelvin is CSL's seed health expert and manages the Phytosanitary Export Testing Laboratory (PETL). This involves testing export lots of seeds and plant products for plant pests as well as providing technical advice on interpretation of international phytosanitary legislation for Defra, their Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate and commercial customers. He also represents the UK on EPPO's panel on Technical Measures for Diagnostic Laboratories and also has expertise in developing molecular diagnostics for quarantine fungal plant pathogens including Phytophthora ramorum and Monilinia fructicola.

Sue Hockland -
Sub Team Leader Nematology
Sue manages the delegated budgets and other resources of the Nematology sub-team of the Pest and Disease Identification Team. She provides technical and scientific advice and training on all nematology issues, including identification of quarantine pests, eradication and containment campaigns and other plant health matters. Furthermore she acts as a UK/CSL representative at meetings of EPPO, the EC and international nematology societies.

Sub Team Leader Entomology
Dom manages the Entomology Sub-team so as to ensure the provision of a high-quality comprehensive pest identification and consultancy service to Plant Health Division, Defra, and other clients. He also acts as the identification specialist for the Thysanoptera and Agromyzidae (Diptera).

Chris Malumphy -
Senior Entomologist
Chris' role is to work within the Pest and Disease Identification Tea to provide an invertebrate identification service, consultancy and training for the Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate and other customers. His specialist areas include the whitefly (Aleyrodidae), scale insects (Coccoidea) and fruit flies (Tephritidae). Furthermore he manages the CSL arthropod collections and acts as a UK technical expert at EPPO meetings.

Anna Skelton -
Sub Team Leader Virology
Anna is the acting sub team leader and a senior diagnostician in the virology sub team of the Pest and Disease Identification team, providing diagnosis and advice on plant diseases caused by viruses and virus-like pathogens. She has responsibility for examination of samples on arrival, approving diagnoses and writing of the reports to PHSI and commercial customers.

Rebecca Weekes -
Sub Team Leader Molecular Technology Unit (MTU)
Rebecca's responsibilities include the management of the MTU, its budget, quality issues (ISO 9001 and 17025) and the MTU labs (ensuring maintenance of equipment, consumables and training of users) as well as overseeing service delivery areas including GM testing, sequencing and molecular diagnostics (for plant pathogens).
